How to Care for Your Jewellery: Expert Tips for Longevity and Shine

Jewellery is an investment in both beauty and sentiment, however, to preserve the longevity and shine of your piece, it's essential to know how to care for your jewellery

Keep Jewellery Dry
One of the most important things you can do to maintain the beauty of your jewellery is to keep it dry. Water, whether from swimming, showering, or exercising, can damage metals and gemstones. Moisture, especially salt or chlorinated water, can cause tarnishing, dullness, or degradation of the metal and gemstones.

Avoid Chemicals and Harsh Substances
Chemicals found in household cleaners, perfumes, lotions, hairsprays, and even some skin-care products can be damaging to your jewellery. These substances can cause metals to tarnish, gemstones to lose their lustre, or even discolour. Always apply such products before putting on your jewellery, and allow them to fully dry before wearing your pieces.

Store Jewellery Properly
When you’re not wearing your jewellery, it’s best to keep your pieces in the provided pouch, or a lined jewellery box to prevent scratches and exposure to air, which can cause tarnishing. Store pieces separately from other jewellery to prevent scratches, and avoid storing it in direct sunlight to preserve the colour and integrity of your jewellery.

Clean Gently and Regularly
Keeping your jewellery clean helps to maintain its shine and prevent buildup of oils and dirt. For gold vermeil and sterling silver, use a soft polishing cloth to remove tarnish and restore shine. Avoid using abrasive materials, as they can scratch the surface. For gemstones, use a soft, damp cloth to gently wipe away dirt or dust. Never use harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, or abrasives, as these can damage the delicate surface of the stones.

Be Mindful of Impact and Wear
Jewellery, particularly pieces with gemstones, can be sensitive to impact. Avoid wearing jewellery when engaging in physical activities or when doing tasks that may cause it to get scratched or damaged. Gemstones, such as opal and moonstone, are softer and more prone to chips and cracks, so take extra care to protect them from accidental knocks.

Caring for your jewellery doesn’t have to be difficult—following these few simple steps will ensure your pieces remain as beautiful as the day you bought them.
